Your body in a unique manner which means it requires your attention and care year-round. The heat in the summer can make anyone uncomfortable, so people with chronic kidney disease often have more to deal with. While it can be a challenge to get accustomed to the changes in the weather, there are simple ways to feel good, no matter the change. 

What Summer Means For Your Kidneys 

The heat does not have to prohibit you from living with CKD this summer. By understanding the important aspects of summer, you can keep your kidneys healthy while still having a great season. Summer Nutrition Tips

The summer is the time to take control of your hydration Fluid intake is essential during this time, and it does not only have to happen through beverages. Caffeine, alcohol, and large amounts of sugar can have adverse effects on your hydration levels. Incorporating lemons, limes, and other flavors into the water can make it more fun to drink on those hot summer days. Fruits such as watermelon and pineapple have a high water content that can make you feel refreshed just by eating them.  

Summer Exercise Tips

Exercising in the heat can pose some challenges for those living with CKD. One of the main things to take into account involves swimming. When you go swimming, ensure that your access is protected if you are on dialysis check. The Mayo Clinic also explains that it is important to avoid non-chlorinated bodies of water such as lakes, ponds, and rivers because they can hold more bacteria that are dangerous if they enter the body. 

On the other hand, other exercises out of the water can get very hot during the summer, especially if they are outdoors. If you are choosing to participate in an activity that is mostly outside, be sure to bring plenty of water and a towel to wet the back of your neck with cold water if you feel yourself overheating. 

Enjoy The Season In A Healthy Way

Chronic heat stress and constant dehydration have the capacity to increase the risk of living with CKD and potentially cause kidney failure. While summer is the time of year with the highest levels of heat, these are precautions patients must take year-round. According to Florida Kidney Physicians, body temperatures above 104 degrees Fahrenheit can cause significant issues for the kidneys. The heat causes low blood pressure and decreased kidney function. 

It is no reason to dismantle summer plans. It is just key to have your condition in check. By incorporating the tips for hydration and getting active in a safe way, you can enjoy everything you want to this summer, without damaging your kidneys.
